Belmont and the Dragon: The Forest of Doom and Gloom is the first in a gorgeous new junior fiction series. The 48 page full-colour format mixes adventure and humour, with a fast-moving, slightly silly story and cartoon-style illustrations for a combination which emerging readers will adore...the book has the feel of a cartoon episode, with the illustrations having depth and the twists of the storyline offering both surprises and laughs. There’s nothing not to like here

Sally Murphy, Aussiereviews.com

It is a wonderful read-aloud story for parents who will enjoy the jokes about the place names of Old (New) York and, of course recognise the landmarks in the beautifully coloured illustrations...Zarb’s illustrations are a delight and have enormous kid appeal. And, it seems, there are more adventures planned for Belmont and Burnie.

Sandy Campbell, former president of the Children’s Book Council of Australia (NSW)

Short but surprisingly satisfying read for children who are not quite ready for a lengthy, more challenging book...Slick graphics and snappy prose; a good one for reluctant readers.

Just perfect for young readers, and especially boys, this new series is filled with craziness and chaos and wonderful animation-like illustrations.

Christopher Cheng, newkidsbooksinoz.blogspot.com

This is a funny, madcap and mayhem story with a good dose of old fashioned slapstick. The illustrations, although set in Old York, are modern and full of humour. Belmont and the Dragon is a great book to introduce boys to reading.

Belmont and the Dragon: The Wand and the Sword

This is the second book about the adventures of Belmont and Burnie.

Huge merit in the interesting use of language - eg. ‘chopped liver on pumpernickel’ - fast paced and funny, this adventure story engages and maintains the interest of reluctant and early readers’. Speech Pathology Australia

Remember when you first saw The Incredibles, or Shrek? The visuals were amazing, the characters beautifully rendered, and the narrative was one adults could endure time and time again as the kids watched it on high rotation. Belmont and the Dragon: The Wand and the Sword, has a lot in common with these Hollywood blockbusters. Great illustrations that will engage young readers, fabulous detail that really brings the characters to life, and a sense of fun that leaps off the page.

Australian Bookseller & Publisher magazine (March 2009, Vol 88, No 6.)

The second title in the Belmont and the Dragon series is another fun read for young readers. These books will greatly assist young readers to gain confidence in reading and help move them to independent reading...

Christopher Cheng, newkidsbooksinoz.blogspot.com/

In this, the second story ... the fast paced action and humour continue ... The text works together with the colour illustrations ... in a format likely to appeal to reluctant readers and to children making the transition from picture books to first novels.

Belmont and the Dragon: Danger in Redwitch Village

by Mike Zarb & Robin Gold

This is the fourth book about the adventures of Belmont and Burnie.

‘A series intended to appeal to boys, illustrated by the original artist for the Pearlie books.
Old York is meant to be mediaeval but here we have beatnik ‘batniks’, one of which is called ‘Thelonious’, and pizza, amongst other amusing things including a twist on the gifting of the Statue of Liberty. Alliteration, puns, visual jokes and nutty characters make for a great deal of fun. The best book so far in the series. Lots of action, very few words; illustrated in a lively cartoon-style.’

Magpies Magazine: Talking about books for children

Old York is in terrible danger! Three Beastly Bedraggled Batniks have stolen a top-secret compound called Kablooey, and it’s up to Belmont and Burnie to save the day. The two friends pursue the batniks deep into Redwitch Village where they face to face with ‘The Boss’, whose true identity is shrouded in mystery. Can Belmont and Burnie prevent Old York from being blown into itsy-bitsy, teensy weensy pieces? And just what in tarnation is a Kablooey, anyhoo?
